What is the Trillium Drug Program?
The Trillium Drug Program (TDP) is an annual provincial government program for Ontario residents aged 25-64 who have a valid Ontario Health Card and spend a large part of their income on prescription medications. Residents must have a valid Ontario Health Card in order to apply. The TDP provides benefits for certain prescription drugs when drug costs for a household are higher than approximately four per cent of the household income or total net household income.
What does the Trillium Drug Program Cover?
If you qualify and once you are enrolled, the Trillium Drug Program covers the full cost of covered drugs.
Coverage kicks in after:
- Any coverage from another plan in your household, such as from a spouse or another job is exhausted.
- Then, you must pay the deductible out of pocket, which is calculated on an individual basis based on your income.
After that, the full cost of the drug is paid for by the program, minus a $2 co-pay.

What is the Ontario Drug Program?
If you are over 65 years old, live in Ontario, and have a valid Ontario Health Card you automatically qualify for the Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) program. ODB covers eligible prescription drug costs. Under ODB, recipients pay a yearly set amount of up to $100 towards your drugs, called a deductible. The deductible is paid off by buying prescription drugs covered under ODB. Once the yearly deductible is paid, recipients will pay up to the maximum ODB dispensing fee of $6.11 for each prescription drug – this fee is called a “co-payment.” Click here to learn more about the Provincial Government’s prescription drug support programs.
Seniors can apply for help with their costs through the Seniors Co-Payment Program (SCP). Under SCP, recipients will pay no annual deductible and co-payments cost $2 or less, click here for the application the form.
