CEWS picket at Royal York

After the Royal York and Chelsea abruptly ended their participation in the CEWS program to bring back laid off workers, leaving only the Sheraton using the program this way, Local 75 turned up the heat.

Local 75 meets with Liberal MP John McKay – Scarborough—Guildwood

  • We began brought Local 75 members to meet with their key Members of Parliament, including Adam Vaughan, the MP for the Royal York, and a several MPs with Royal York members in their ridings.
  • Almost 100 calls from Royal York members were made went into Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland.
  • We protested in front of the Royal York and delivered a petition to the Royal York owners, KingSett Capital
  • We were featured in this Globe and Mail story on the challenges of the CEWS program

As a result, the government included a few key promises in the recent speech from the throne 1) a commitment to extend CEWS and 2) a commitment to targeted assistance for hospitality — yet the important details have not been released. We must keep up the pressure to make sure we are ALL included in an extended CEWS.
